Wildcard Overview - Season 9 - Elune
Wildcard Overview
For the sake of this guide I will be using the term "Hero/Heroes" to describe individual player characters.
What is wildcard?
Wildcard is an alternative game mode where in addition to some game mode specific ability buffs your Heroes abilities and talents are acquired randomly at set intervals while you level.Additionally for Season 9 Legendary and Epic Mystic Enchants(RE's) from the Mystic Enchant system have been split up into individual pieces and included into the available randomized talent pool.
Accessing Wildcard
Wildcard is currently only available on the Elune server, and is the default game mode for this server.Heroes are introduced to this system at level 1, where they are given 4 random abilities. Heroes are also given options "Roll Abilities", or randomize those abilities and exchange those abilities for other random abilities, and options to "Lock" each ability individually which prevents them from being replaced by another random ability. Also a final option to "Keep abilities" which removed the wildcard dice and ability visual from the UI.
Then starting with level 10, at every level Wildcard Heroes will receive 1 random talent, and every two levels they receive 1 random ability. By level 60 Wildcard Heroes will have accumulated a total of 26 abilities and 51 talents.
You can additionally guarantee specific abilities and talents in the random ability/talent acquisition of your Wildcard Hero while leveling by obtaining and activating Ability and Talent Skill cards.
There are two types each of Talent and Ability skill cards, the primary type being "Normal" cards and they secondary type being "Golden" cards.
Between the two types of cards you can activate 4 ability (2 normal, 2 golden) and 6 talent (3 normal and 3 gold) skill cards which guarantee you receive those 4 and 6 talents on your Wildcard Hero while leveling.
These cards can also be used to easily control the first 4 abilities you obtain at level 1.
To control your Heroes level 1 abilities you will simply need to activate the ability card for the ability you want, then hit the "Roll Abilities" button. Doing this give your Hero the ability of the activated skill card(s), you can then "Lock" that ability as one of your 4 starting abilities. Once you have done this you can then change your activated skill cards to the skill cards you would like your Hero to receive while leveling.
Note: You can change your activated cards at any point before your Hero reaches level 10, but you can not activate any skill cards once your Hero has gone above level 9.
- Side note: If you activate an addition specialization on your hero, even at level 60 you can use this to "pick" your 4 starting abilities and still change your active skill cards as long as you do not roll an additional talents or abilities other than the starting 4 before you change activate skill cards
"Rolling/Rerolling"
One of the fundamental features of Wildcard is the ability to exchange, or give up one of the current talents or abilities your Hero has for another random talent or ability respectively. This is commonly referred to as "Rolling", "Doing Rolls", "Rerolling", etc.- Moving forward the terms "Reroll" or "Rerolling" will be used to describe this process.

Both Scrolls of Fortune and skill cards are primarily obtained from the in game NPC named Silas Darkmoon by spending Marks

Once you have obtained Scrolls of Fortune you can go into your in game Character Advancement menu to select specific abilities and talents you would like your hero to reroll.
Selecting "Unlearn" this way on an ability or talent will reroll that ability or talent for another random one.
Rarities and Ranks of Talents
Both talents and abilities are divided into different rarities those being; common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary. In Season 9 Wildcard, Rarities only effect how likely you are to encounter that ability or talent, with legendary rarities rolling the least often, and common rarities occurring the most often.
Additionally talents have multiple individual ranks, with each rank generally being a different rarity.
What happens when I have 1/5 of a talent and I reroll a different talent into a different rank of the talent? 5/5 for example? Do I now have two talent points wasted into the same talent?
You get an upgrade! If you reroll a talent into another talent you currently have a lower rank in, the talent you already have a point in upgrades to the higher rank, and the additional talent reroll is rolled again. This is commonly called an upgrade.Weighting Vs Synergy & Relevancy
Weighting
In previous seasons and game modes Ascension has commonly used the term Weighting. Weighting, or Weight was a system put in place to influence the randomness of ability acquisition. Your if your Hero had specific abilities the weighting caused every reroll you did to have a higher chance of rolling into a specific, or specific set of abilities. The Season 9 official article describes weighting:
Previously, game modes like Draft had many unintuitive rules, weighting, and restrictions: i.e. rolling a one ability may increase your chance to see another, even if you didn’t want it.
Synergy & Relevancy
Synergy and Relevancy are relatively new terms introduced in Season 9 and are used to describe a specific type of reroll Heroes have a chance of encountering whenever they do any reroll. This Synergy roll selects an ability or talent you already have, and rolls something relevant that compliments that selected ability or talent; Synergy rolls work specifically for abilities to talents and talents to abilities.
Additionally Synergies have a layer of bad luck protection in which if you receive a Synergy roll and you decide to roll it off, you will not receive that same Synergy roll again for at least 25 synergy rerolls.
While weighting effected every single reroll your Hero would do, Relevancy of abilities to talents, and talents to abilities only has effect on specific Synergy rolls. While not every reroll your Hero will do will be a Synergy Roll: every roll done increases the chance to a Synergy roll until you get one.
Fundamentally Synergies function differently from weighting by allow you to choose what abilities/talents you want your hero to keep instead being forced to give up an ability you like just so you can effect the options that would be presented to your Hero.
